UNASKED FOR REVIEW: Really good game, with some rough spots
With the DLC done, here's the full scoop: Lies of P is great and really approachable to people looking to get into the souls-like subgenre. However, the heavy-handed suggestion of parries over dodging or simply blocking makes the combat feel one dimensional occasionally and could dissuade those who dislike a "block rhythm" defense. I get the reward of breaking the enemies' weapons to reduce their damage/increase yours can be fun. But, I wish it wasn't the only way to stay afloat in particularly difficult fights.
Being able to craft/use different versions of weapons with no level requirement is a BIG plus and makes player expression really stand out. I often found myself mashing blades and handles together with satisfying and comedic results; some combinations were even surprisingly useful!
I decided to go with an Advance build throughout the game, which revealed a flaw in the weapon diversity. Many of the weapons you find almost always err on Motivity and Technique, with Advance getting little attention. In fact, not a single special or boss weapon scales with Advance...I had to rely on applying Advance cranks to force the scaling to my build (there aren't many to be found versus the abundance of the other two attributes). Though some Advance-scaling weapons were fun, it felt like you often found them way too late in the game or less appealing than others.
Overall, the story was engaging with some slightly confusing beats regarding the Alchemists. It was nice to experience the DLC and be there firsthand for some lore explained in the base game. I love that an old fairytale was really given some flourish and detail; excited to see how the developers approach their next game!
Can't say much about the music, honestly, other than it simply fit when introduced. It would have been nice if there was something going on during regular traversal/exploration.
Replayability is appealing with new game plus, in addition to the Boss Rematch feature, often desired among fans of the other souls/souls-likes but never given. I could see myself going through the whole thing again (probably not an Advance build though!).
All in all, Lies of P well worth the price of admission for anyone eager for a challenge and delivers a fresh take on a beloved childhood character. You may get frustrated as is typical with a game of this sort, but keep at it and immerse yourself as a puppet discovering what it truly means to be human.
