Can you actually visit Alpe di Siusi and Lake Carezza in the same day without turning the Dolomites into a race?
After spending the previous two days taking things slow, today we decided to do the exact opposite.
We spent one final morning in Alpe di Siusi with Tintin and Muffin, drove through the Dolomites to Lake Carezza, explored the lake, and then continued across the mountains towards our hotel near Lago di Braies.
This was one of those days where the road between the destinations became part of the adventure.
🐶 TRAVELLING WITH TINTIN & MUFFIN
We travel around Europe with our two Shih Tzus, Tintin and Muffin.
They joined us through Alpe di Siusi, the drive through the Dolomites and our visit to Lake Carezza.
If you’re planning the Dolomites with dogs, this series shows the actual experience including driving, parking, crowds, walks and the practical parts that don’t always make it into travel videos.
📍 DOLOMITES VIEWPOINT FROM THE VIDEO
One of the mountain viewpoints shown during this part of our trip was around:
46°32'36.9"N 11°39'00.1"E
Copy those coordinates directly into Google Maps if you want to find the area.
🏔️ ALPE DI SIUSI
We spent the morning enjoying Alpe di Siusi one final time before leaving around midday.
After two slower days here, today was about covering much more ground.
And just before leaving, we even came across alpacas casually roaming around a farm.
Because apparently Alpe di Siusi still had one more surprise for us.
🌈 LAKE CAREZZA / LAGO DI CAREZZA / KARERSEE
Our next major stop was Lake Carezza in South Tyrol.
The lake is famous for its intense green, turquoise and blue colours, with the Latemar mountains forming the backdrop.
It is relatively compact, which made it a great stop during a longer Dolomites road trip.
🚗 WHERE WE PARKED AT LAKE CAREZZA
We used:
Parkplatz Karersee
P1 Parcheggio – Lago di Carezza
Search this exact name in Google Maps.
During our visit, Google Maps showed the main P1 parking area as open 24 hours.
⚠️ WHY WE DIDN’T USE P2 PARKPLATZ – SIMHILD
We also checked P2 Parkplatz – Simhild before arriving.
However, we found multiple recent Google reviews from visitors reporting incidents involving broken car windows, vandalism and suspected theft.
Those are individual visitor reports, not something we independently verified.
But because we were travelling with luggage in the car, we didn’t want to take the chance.
We therefore chose the main P1 parking area instead.
Wherever you park in a tourist area, it is sensible to keep valuables and luggage out of sight and check the most recent reviews before arriving.
🛣️ OUR ROUTE FOR THE DAY
Alpe di Siusi
→ Dolomites mountain drive
→ Lake Carezza
→ Drive across the Dolomites
→ Hotel near Lago di Braies
The interesting part was that these places felt completely different despite being visited on the same day.
Alpe di Siusi gave us huge open alpine meadows.
Lake Carezza gave us forest, emerald water and the Latemar mountains.
And the hours of driving between them gave us some of the most dramatic scenery of the entire trip.
So can you visit Alpe di Siusi and Lake Carezza in one day?
For us, yes.
We spent the morning in Alpe di Siusi, reached Lake Carezza later in the day, had enough time to enjoy the lake and still continued towards Lago di Braies that evening.
I wouldn’t try to pack many more major attractions into the same day.
Leave enough time for the drive because in the Dolomites, the road itself is part of the experience.
And in the next chapter…
we wake up near Lago di Braies.
