A viral video says a million dollars plus CPP and OAS buys a paid-off retirement with a buffer. The word doing the work is "maximum."
The maximum CPP retirement pension at 65 is $1,507.65 a month. The average new one, in July 2026, was $858.34. That is 56.9% of the ceiling, and a gap of $7,791.72 a year. Almost nobody collects the number the video quotes.

THE CPP NUMBER
$1,507.65 a month is the 2026 maximum, and it requires close to 40 years of contributions at or above the yearly maximum pensionable earnings. The average new retirement pension starting at 65 in July 2026 was $858.34 a month. The gap between the two is $649.31 a month, or $7,791.72 a year, and it is the difference between the retirement in the video and the one most people actually get.
THE OAS ASSUMPTION
The full OAS pension assumes 40 years of residence in Canada after age 18. Anyone who arrived later receives a proportional amount: 20 years of residence means half. The video never mentions residence, and for a large share of the audience that is the single biggest line item it skips.
WHAT THE MILLION ACTUALLY BUYS
Rebuilt with the average pension instead of the maximum, the retirement in the video comes to about $59,450 a year rather than $65,928. The million dollars is still there. The buffer is not.
WHAT I CANNOT TELL YOU
I do not know your contribution history, your residence years, or when you plan to start. Those three decide almost everything, and they are the three the video assumes away.

The $59,450 rebuild and the $7,791.72 gap are my own calculations from the figures above, and the arithmetic is said out loud in the video.
