Diana Ross didn't rise alone — ten other women stood in the same rooms at Motown and watched the spotlight pass them by. Some lost a song. Some lost a career. One of them lost her life, on a date that still doesn't feel like a coincidence.
This is the story Motown's greatest hits never tell you: the Velvelettes, who beat the Supremes in a live singing contest and got buried anyway. Kim Weston, who turned down "Dancing in the Street" and spent the rest of her life hearing it on the radio. Mary Wells, Motown's first true superstar, who walked away at 21 and was never the same again. Martha Reeves, Gladys Knight, Jean Terrell, Brenda Holloway, the Marvelettes, Mary Wilson — and at #1, the woman who named the Supremes, sang lead before anyone else did, and died eight years to the day the label let her go.
This isn't the highlight reel. This is the other side of the door.
