What is the difference between a switch, a router and a firewall? Follow three paths through a small office network: local printing, access to an internal server, and an external HTTPS connection.
This CCNA lesson explains Layer 2 MAC learning, VLAN boundaries, Layer 3 switch routing with SVIs, the WAN router, ACL filtering and stateful firewall behavior. We also introduce NGFW capabilities, IPS versus passive IDS, access points and wireless controllers.
You will see why a valid route does not guarantee permission, why an Internet-edge firewall does not inspect every internal flow, and why wireless client data does not always pass through the controller. The chosen architecture uses local wireless switching; central switching is shown as a separate comparison.
