Enjoy the might of the Great Southern Ocean on the Great Ocean Road in Australia!
This area does not have an official title, but the closest lookout has quite an intriguing name — The Broken Head Lookout.
While there is no known official explanation for the origin of the name (beyond its obvious direct translation), the most likely theory is linked to the landscape itself. In English, a head or headland is a point of land that extends into the sea. Broken Head can therefore be interpreted as "broken headland" or "fractured promontory."
This is one of the most striking sections of coastline along the Great Ocean Road, and its name describes the landscape remarkably well. For millions of years, the waves of the Southern Ocean have eroded the region's soft limestone cliffs, creating cracks, sheer faces, collapsed sections, and isolated sea stacks that continue to evolve today.
The lookout offers sweeping views of the wild part of the Great Ocean Road and The Shipwreck Coast. Here, the immense power of the ocean is impossible to miss: massive waves crash against the cliffs below, while wind and water continue to shape the landscape before your eyes. Broken Head therefore is a reminder that even the most imposing rock formations are temporary in the face of nature and time.
After being closed for an extended period due to nearby construction works, the lookout has now reopened and once again welcomes visitors eager to experience the beauty of the ocean and the rugged wilderness of this coastline.
