The stotra gives its own prescription — recite it at the three sandhyas and the reciter becomes the equal of Kubera. Play it before your lamp each morning, and again at dusk. THE STORY BEHIND IT From the Brahmavaivarta Purana 2.39.52-72, in the Narada-Narayana dialogue; the Devi Bhagavata carries it at 9.42 as Purandara-krita. Indra, king of the Devas, had been stripped of everything — sovereignty, splendour, strength, reputation. He did not reach for a weapon: he praised Mahalakshmi by every one of her names, then asked plainly for all of it back. THE VERSE WORTH SITTING WITH "Yaya vina jagat sarvam bhasmibhutam asarakam jivanmritam cha vishvam cha shavatulyam yaya vina" (verse 12) "Without her the whole world is burnt to ash and worth nothing. Without her the universe is dead while it still lives — no better than a corpse." The most quoted verse of the stotra — and it is not about money. Shri is what makes a thing alive and worth approaching. Withdraw her and the same world remains, atom for atom, and is a corpse. WHAT IT PROMISES (PHALASHRUTI) "Idam stotram mahapunyam trisandhyam yah pathet narah kuberatulyah sa bhavet rajarajeshvaro mahan" "Whoever recites this most meritorious stotra at the three sandhyas becomes the equal of Kubera, a great emperor among emperors." Recited a full month with restraint, it promises great happiness and lordship. Its central petition is the most direct in the Lakshmi corpus (verse 19): "Rajyam dehi shriyam dehi balam dehi sureshvari" — give me kingdom, give me fortune, give me strength, O Queen of the Devas.
