The Brutal Training of a Smokejumper (Jumping Into Wildfires With a Shovel)

You’re 22 years old, and your job is to jump out of an airplane toward a burning forest, armed with a shovel. There are no roads, no fire trucks, and no way back except on foot. In this POV, you’ll go through the physical and parachute training smokejumpers face, and then relive the tragedy of Mann Gulch in 1949, a fire that became a turning point for wildfire firefighting. The video closes with what changed after that disaster, and how those lessons still save lives today. Subscribe for more POVs about extreme jobs. #Smokejumper #Wildfire #MannGulch
