Chaos in Bangkok? Anti-IMF Protesters Clash With Thai Police Near World Bank Meetings | World

Hundreds of anti-IMF and anti-World Bank protesters marched through Bangkok, Thailand, on October 15, 2026, before clashing with police near the venue hosting meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group. Demonstrators from several grassroots organisations marched towards the convention centre, carrying banners, signs and balloons opposing the international financial institutions. Protesters attempted to hang a banner on a pedestrian bridge, where they confronted riot police. Officers later set up barriers near the meetings venue as demonstrators gathered on the other side. The protesters called for greater public participation in decisions affecting Thailand’s economic development. Representatives also raised concerns about land rights, livelihoods and food security, arguing that communities affected by development policies should have a greater say in shaping the country's future. The demonstration brought together activists and grassroots groups criticising the influence of global financial institutions. Signs and banners included messages opposing the IMF and World Bank, as well as the slogan “We Are the 99%.” Watch the footage from Bangkok showing the march, protest banners, police barriers and clashes near the international meetings venue.
