The Asakusa Samba Carnival Parade Contest, which marks the end of summer in Asakusa, has grown since its inception in 1981, supported by the lively people of Asakusa, and in recent years has become a major event attracting 500,000 visitors every year. Furthermore, thanks to the efforts of the participating teams, who model themselves after the Rio de Janeiro Carnival in Brazil, the event boasts a quality worthy of being called the largest carnival in the Northern Hemisphere. The powerful energy of the bateria (drummers), the dynamic dancing of the dancers, the songs that liven up the carnival, the gorgeously decorated "allegoria" (floats), and the rhythm of samba resonate throughout the town of Asakusa.
