Node2Shell Explained: The Node.js Brotli Vulnerability and Fix (CVE-2026-111497)

Node2Shell is the name used by Imperva for its research into CVE-2026-111497, a high-severity vulnerability in the Brotli decoder bundled with Node.js. In this video, I explain what the Node.js Brotli bug does, which applications may be exposed, and how to update Node.js and verify the version your server is actually running. The local demo follows a Brotli request through an Express app, then checks the app again after updating Node.js. The risk applies when an application decompresses Brotli data an attacker can control. A 401 response by itself does not prove the request body was never processed. This video demonstrates the request path and checks the patch; it does not run an exploit payload. The Node.js project lists fixes in 22.23.4, 24.22.1, and 26.12.1. Update to the latest supported release for your Node.js line, and restart affected processes and containers so they use the updated runtime.
