Sermon Title: The Rejects, the Religious, and the Redeemer
Scripture: Mark 2:13-17
Speaker: Ken Jewell, Biblical Counselor
Who does Jesus call to follow Him? And what does it really mean to be His disciple?
In Mark 2:13–17, Jesus calls Levi (Matthew), a despised tax collector, to follow Him. While the religious leaders questioned why Jesus would associate with tax collectors and sinners, Jesus demonstrated that His invitation is rooted in grace, not human goodness or religious performance.
In this message from our Encounters with Jesus sermon series, Ken Jewell explores the difference between self-righteous religion and the transforming grace of Jesus Christ. Through the calling of Matthew, we discover what true discipleship looks like, why Jesus came to save sinners, and how Christians are called to love others and share the gospel.
In this sermon, you'll learn:
Why Jesus welcomed sinners and those rejected by religious leaders
The difference between religion, self-righteousness, and God's grace
What it means to follow Jesus through confession, repentance, and transformation
How to love people who don't know Christ without compromising your faith
Why making disciples means becoming more like Jesus
How to recognize our own need for forgiveness and salvation
Following Jesus isn't about becoming good enough to earn God's acceptance. It's about receiving His grace and allowing Him to transform our hearts, relationships, and lives.
