What if one of the most important skills we could develop is learning to consciously direct our own attention?
Every day, countless things compete for our attention. Notifications, advertisements, social media, conversations, news, entertainment, and others' expectations continually invite us to look, listen, react, and engage.
Our attention can move from one thing to another so quickly that we barely notice where it has gone.
I'm the Light, I Choose Where It Shines is an uplifting musical exploration of internal mastery—the ability to notice our attention, direct it intentionally, and build the concentration to sustain it.
🌿 THREE LEVELS OF CONSCIOUS ATTENTION
The philosophical teaching behind this song describes three interconnected aspects of our experience:
🔹 Awareness — The broader field of consciousness through which we experience thoughts, feelings, sensations, and the world around us.
🔹 Attention — The focusing of awareness upon something particular, such as a thought, conversation, sound, activity, or experience.
🔹 Concentration — The ability to sustain that attention deliberately over time.
Imagine standing in a beautiful garden. You notice the entire scene: the sunlight, flowers, breeze, birds, and surrounding sounds.
Then your attention settles upon a single flower.
As you continue observing its colors, patterns, and delicate details, you begin practicing concentration. The difference lies in learning to guide that process consciously.
✨ WHO IS DIRECTING OUR ATTENTION?
Much of modern life is designed to capture and hold our attention.
An advertisement invites us to desire something. A notification interrupts our thoughts. A social media post encourages us to react. A compliment brings pleasure, while criticism may occupy our minds for hours.
When we continually follow these external signals, our attention can become fragmented, and our sense of worth may become increasingly dependent upon recognition and approval.
The original teaching invites us to develop an internal center of awareness—a place from which we can observe these influences and decide how to respond.
This is the beginning of internal mastery.
It is the ability to notice what has captured our attention and recognize that we can choose where to direct it next.
The tortoise can extend its limbs to interact with the world and withdraw them when appropriate.
Similarly, we can learn to engage our senses and attention intentionally, then withdraw our attention from distractions when we choose.
The metaphor illustrates self-mastery through conscious engagement and withdrawal.
We can participate fully in life while developing the ability to return to our inner center.
🌞 ARE WE THE RAY OF LIGHT OR THE SOURCE?
Perhaps the most fascinating idea in the teaching is the distinction between identifying with our attention and recognizing the awareness from which attention emerges.
Imagine attention as a beam of light.
Throughout the day, that beam illuminates different experiences. It may shine upon a conversation, a memory, a worry, a creative project, or something beautiful in nature.
We often become so absorbed in whatever the beam illuminates that we forget to notice the awareness directing it.
The teaching offers a spiritual metaphor:
Rather than thinking of ourselves only as the ray of light reaching outward, we can explore what it means to be the source from which that light shines.
This invites a shift in perspective—from being continually pulled toward whatever captures our interest to becoming more conscious of how we direct our attention.
🎶 TURNING THE TEACHING INTO MUSIC
The song transforms these concepts into a simple, memorable refrain:
First I notice — Awareness!
Then I focus — Attention!
Then I stay with what I choose — That's concentration!
And the chorus reminds us:
I'm the light, I choose where it shines!
I can bring it home anytime.
The melody becomes a playful way to remember the practice: notice where your attention has gone, consciously redirect it, and gently strengthen your ability to remain focused.
💛 A LITTLE REFLECTION FOR THE JOURNEY
Consider how often your attention moves throughout the day.
How frequently do you choose what deserves your focus, and how often does something else choose for you?
What might change if you practiced directing your attention toward the people, activities, values, and experiences that genuinely matter to you?
Internal mastery develops through practice, one moment of awareness at a time.
