Vilnius Airport (VNO) is more than just Lithuania’s busiest air gateway; it holds a tapestry of hidden stories that blend art, history, technology, and resilience.
Beyond its bustling terminals lies a striking art installation crafted from over a thousand knives, scissors, lighters, and other items confiscated at security checkpoints. Standing at 1.5 meters high, this sculpture transforms discarded dangers into a powerful commentary on aviation safety and passenger behavior.
Since the beginning of 2025, the airport has carried the honorary name Vilnius Čiurlionis International Airport, paying tribute to the celebrated painter-composer Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis until the end of 2029. This renaming is a unique cultural homage, marking a rare instance of an airport embracing living-art heritage.
Its original terminal, completed between 1934 and 1936, was once deemed overly luxurious for the city’s modest passenger numbers. Designed by Józefa Mrówkowa-Ochmańska, the building housed a restaurant terrace, passenger hotel, customs post, police station, post office, and newspaper kiosk all under one elegant roof.
Opened on 17 August 1932 with LOT-operated routes to Warsaw and Riga, the airport began its life on pasture and swampland south of Vilnius. After serving as a military airfield during World War II, it reopened for civilian flights on 17 July 1944, carrying forward its rugged origins into the modern era.
Despite handling over five million passengers annually, Vilnius Airport operates with a single runway (01/19) that stretches 2,515 meters at an elevation of just 197 meters above sea level. This configuration enables rapid turnarounds and minimizes taxi times for aircraft.
Recognized as one of Europe’s fastest-growing small airports, its passenger traffic has doubled over the past decade, expanding routes across Eastern and Western Europe and showcasing Lithuania’s growing connectivity.
In July 2021, the airport operator introduced an AI-powered travel assistant deployed across Vilnius, Kaunas, and Palanga airports—a pioneering move in the Baltic region that enhances passenger planning and support.
Beneath the arrivals hall lies the “Oro uostas” railway station, offering an eight-minute direct train to Vilnius Central—an uncommon but welcome convenience for a capital-city airport.
During the summer of 2017, the runway underwent a major 35-day reconstruction, forcing airlines to divert flights to nearby Kaunas Airport. This logistical challenge underscored the resilience and adaptability of Lithuania’s airport network.
These captivating stories reveal Vilnius Airport’s hidden dimensions—making it a place where culture, innovation, and history converge beyond the departure gates.
