📜 ABOUT THIS STORY
Sun Wukong is the Monkey King, the hero of the Chinese novel Journey to the West. In Japan his name is read Son Goku, which is why many children outside China first met him in Dragon Ball.
The novel tells of a pilgrimage, and that pilgrimage really happened. In the year 629 a young monk called Xuanzang left China against the law, crossed deserts and mountains, studied in India, and came home with hundreds of Buddhist texts. Centuries later his travel notes helped archaeologists find lost Buddhist sites, including the ruins of Nalanda.
Then the stories took over. Over about five hundred years the brave scholar became a helpless passenger, and a monkey servant took the whole book. Why? Because the monk is not allowed to act, and the monkey can do everything. He crosses his own name out of the record of the dead and fights the armies of heaven. In the end he is controlled only by a thin gold band and a few words.
