For years, I’ve told people:
How you are does not define who you are.
But rereading Chapter 13 of I Am Worth It forced me to confront something:
I still don’t always believe the things I say about myself.
I don’t always believe I’m loved.
I don’t always believe I’m worth loving.
I don’t always believe I’m capable.
But I’m trying to accept that my feelings about myself may not be the final authority on who I am.
In Chapter 13: Defining Identity, I originally wrote about worth, freedom, salvation, adoption, belonging, and the difference between what we do and who we are.
Years later, the part I keep coming back to is simpler:
Who you are and how you are are not the same thing.
Our wounds, trauma, shame, addictions, coping mechanisms, perfectionism, performance, and persona can begin to cover something deeper.
Belovedness.
And sometimes we build entire identities around avoiding the pain we would have to walk through to get back there.
This is I Am Worth It: Revisited.
I’m rereading the book without rewriting it or fixing the guy who wrote it.
After each chapter, I sit with one question:
What still feels true?
And this time, the question is:
What would change if you stopped trying to become worthy and started living like you already are?
