Plato's Timaeus stands as one of the most extraordinary cases of intellectual continuity and influence in history. For over two millennia, generation after generation, it shaped the intellectual elites who helped forge Western civilization: from classical Greece through the Hellenistic world, the Roman Empire, medieval Europe, and the Renaissance, all the way to the Scientific Revolution and the threshold of the nineteenth century. Few texts—if any—can boast such an enduring trajectory and so vast a sphere of influence: its ideas reached far beyond the confines of philosophy, planting the seeds of modern science and leaving a profound mark on the religious and theological traditions that emerged during late antiquity, such as Christianity, Gnosticism, and Hermeticism.
