They disappeared, and their families feared the worst. Then they came back. A thirteen-year-old who escaped a cabin after 88 days. A girl hidden in an upstairs bedroom for ten years, a short drive from home. A student who woke up 700 miles from a frozen lake, with no memory of 15 months. And a teacher who came back twice, and then vanished a third time.
The ten cases, in order: Jayme Closs, taken from her home in Barron, Wisconsin, in 2018; Tanya Kach, who vanished from McKeesport, Pennsylvania, in 1996; Kayla Unbehaun, taken from South Elgin, Illinois, in 2017 and found in Asheville in 2023; Steven Kubacki, who vanished on Lake Michigan in 1978; Elizabeth Shoaf, held in a bunker in Lugoff, South Carolina, in 2006; Jeff Ingram, who woke up in Denver with no memory in 2006; Katie Beers, held under a house on Long Island in 1992–93; Brenda Heist, who left Lititz, Pennsylvania, in 2002 and was declared dead; Kara Robinson, who escaped her kidnapper in South Carolina in 2002; and Hannah Upp, who disappeared in New York in 2008, Maryland in 2013 and St. Thomas in 2017.
