How did a failed salt maker who owed money to his own family end up building a railroad across the open sea? And did Henry Flagler's last great bet ever pay? In January 1912, a man of eighty-two who could barely see rode the first train into Key West, on tracks laid across open water. Doubters had called it Flagler's Folly. This film follows the money behind it, move by move: a boy who left home at fourteen with about a dollar and nine cents in his pocket; a wartime salt business that collapsed and took about $100,000 with it, half of it borrowed from relatives; and a relative's whiskey fortune that, a few years later, put Flagler beside John D. Rockefeller. You will see how the man who wrote Standard Oil's contracts, including its quiet railroad discounts, ended up on the other side of the table, owning a railroad on a coast with almost nothing to carry. Why a grand hotel was really a way to fill trains. Why the landowners of Miami handed him half of their land. What a Florida divorce law, passed in 1901 and repealed four years later, has to do with his story. And what happened to his railroad across the sea after he was gone. The film draws on Rockefeller's own memoir, the work of historians and biographers, TIME magazine's reporting from 1936, a 1909 railroad bond made out to Flagler himself, and the records of museums in Key West, Palm Beach and St. Augustine. It is told with respect for everyone in it: Flagler, his families, and the workers who paid for his railroad, some of them with their lives. The verdict on his last bet is left to you.
