I visited the street piano located in Terminal 3 of Haneda Airport (HND). Looking back at my records, this marks the first time I’ve filmed a performance video here. Back when a W. Hoffmann grand piano sat in the open atrium of Terminal 2 (that’s the piano featured in my YouTube channel’s cover image), I used to get comfortable playing at the Terminal 3 piano before heading over to Terminal 2 to film my videos; consequently, I had never actually recorded a video at this specific Terminal 3 spot until now. The piano in Terminal 2 was situated in a highly visible, high-traffic area, making me feel like a professional pianist whenever I played there. Although that street piano was removed a few years ago, playing there was a major life goal of mine, and looking back, I’m incredibly proud that I got to do it. I’m sure it’s a memory I’ll cherish even on my deathbed—a truly brilliant moment in my life. In contrast, the piano here in Terminal 3—while still in a public area—sits in a quieter, more secluded spot; it’s simply placed right in the middle of a walkway. However, thinking about it now, perhaps Terminal 3—the international terminal—is actually the perfect place for me, given that I play exclusively Western music. After all, playing where there are plenty of international visitors likely leads to a warmer reception, and I personally feel more at ease performing in that kind of environment. Street pianos in areas frequented mostly by Japanese locals tend to attract other pianists, which can make things awkward and difficult. I actually find it more enjoyable to play at a quieter spot like this one. Of course, when I play, I’m always thinking about the people who will find and listen to my music on YouTube. I hardly ever think about the people physically standing near me at the moment of the performance. Seriously!
