For decades, hundreds of suitcases sat hidden inside Willard State Hospital in New York.
When the institution closed, these belongings remained behind.
Inside the suitcases were photographs, letters, clothing and ordinary personal objects — small pieces of lives that had almost disappeared from history.
Among the people connected to the collection was Lawrence Marek, an immigrant who spent decades at Willard and eventually worked as a gravedigger there.
Years later, photographer Jon Crispin documented the forgotten belongings, preserving evidence of the people who had once owned them.
The suitcases were more than luggage.
They were fragments of human lives.
And they raise a haunting question:
What remains of a person when almost everything else is forgotten?
Every object has a story.
Some were never meant to be forgotten.
Welcome to ECHOES & OBJECTS.
