In December 1900, a relief ship arrived at a remote Scottish lighthouse and found no one there. Three keepers - James Ducat, Thomas Marshall, and Donald MacArthur - had vanished without a trace. No bodies. No struggle. No note. Just a stopped clock and a door that had to be forced open. For over a century, this story has been told with two specific, haunting details: a half-eaten meal left on the table, and a chair knocked over as if someone leapt up mid-dinner. Neither detail is real. Both were invented in 1912 by a poem - and the poem's version has been repeated as fact ever since. This documentary uses the actual surviving investigation record - Superintendent Robert Muirhead's official report and keeper Joseph Moore's own telegram, both preserved by the Northern Lighthouse Board - to walk through what the real evidence shows: severe storm damage at the station's landing, missing outerwear that suggests real urgency, and a broken safety protocol that points toward a genuine emergency rather than any of the dramatic alternatives usually attached to this case. Every claim in this video is sourced directly from the Northern Lighthouse Board's own archive and the National Records of Scotland. Where a popular detail turns out to be fiction, this video says so and names exactly where it came from.
