On July 2, 1937, Amelia Earhart radioed: "We must be on you, but cannot see you... but gas is running low." Then she and navigator Fred Noonan vanished somewhere near Howland Island.
This week, a 17-person expedition backed by Purdue University reaches Nikumaroro, a remote atoll 400 miles away, to test a shiny, plane-sized shape in its lagoon: the "Taraia Object." So we put every answer on trial: the ocean, the island, and the Japanese-capture theory. What's confirmed, what's legend, and what we still don't know.
