In the serene village of Marne, under the Manipur Gram Panchayat in Udupi district, John Baptist D’Souza has turned his backyard into a thriving dragon fruit (pitaya) farm. Once a mechanic in Kuwait for 24 years, John returned to his hometown to pursue organic farming ..growing the exotic Mexican-origin dragon fruit right here in coastal Karnataka. Using natural fertilizers like goat, poultry, and cow manure, and a drip irrigation system, he now cultivates over 340 plants and 90 cement posts, producing around 1000 kg of fruit every season. The beautiful cactus-like plants bloom at 8:30 PM, yielding ripe, nutrient-rich fruits within 31 days. Known for its high nutritional value, immunity-boosting properties, and vibrant taste, the dragon fruit is sold locally and cherished by health enthusiasts.
