How do you choose your first riqq? In this riqq lesson I break down the five things that matter: diameter, depth, skin, the tuning mechanism, and weight. At the end I play several riqqs of different sizes and skins so you can hear how each choice changes the sound. Covered in this lesson: • Diameter: why 23cm is the standard, and when to go 22 or 24 • Depth: the one to get right. 5.5cm standard, shallower for small hands • Skin: traditional Saidi fish skin and goat vs coated and transparent plastic • Tuning mechanism: none (traditional), external bolts, or the modern internal system • Weight: what 700 to 900 grams means for your hands, and what to avoid when ordering online • Playing demos of different models so you can hear the differences The riqq (also spelled riq) is the classical tambourine of Arabic music. Everything here is the riqq as I teach it in the Afterman Percussion Conservatory. Full written guide: https://yshaiafterman.com/choosing-a-...
