I would not abandon my 80-year-old grandmother. Instead, I would rebuild her old, neglected house with my own hands and create a new home where we could live together in peace. My name is Lê Giang. I am 22 years old, and I come from a mountainous village in northern Vietnam. After spending four years working in agriculture in South Korea, I returned home hoping to reunite with my family and give my beloved grandmother a comfortable life. But everything changed when I discovered the painful truth about my family. The money I had worked so hard to earn was meant to help my mother build a new house and care for my grandmother. Instead, my grandmother was left living in a makeshift shelter, and my own mother and her new partner drove me away. My heart was broken, but I knew I could not leave my grandmother to face her difficult old age alone. In this second chapter of our journey, I begin working to restore my grandmother’s old house. It is neglected, worn out, and in need of many repairs. We have very little money, so I must rely on my own strength, patience, and resourcefulness. I start by cleaning the house, removing rotten materials, clearing away weeds, and preparing the ground. A kind neighbor gives me some old wooden doors and leftover roof tiles, which I hope to reuse in our new home. To save money, I also plan to collect stones from the nearby stream and use available materials wherever possible. Every stone I carry and every brick I lay brings us one step closer to having a safe place to live. The work is tiring, and there are many challenges ahead, but I am determined to keep going. I may have lost the home I once called mine, but I have not lost my love for my grandmother. She is the family I choose to stand beside, and I want to give her the care, warmth, and security she deserves. As we slowly rebuild this old house, we are also rebuilding our lives. I dream of cooking meals for my grandmother, tending a small vegetable garden, and spending peaceful days together in the Vietnamese countryside. Will I have enough strength and resources to turn this neglected house into a comfortable home? Can my grandmother and I overcome the hardships ahead and find happiness again? This is not just a house renovation. It is a story of family heartbreak, a granddaughter’s devotion, simple rural life, and the courage to begin again with almost nothing. 🌿 In this episode: Beginning the renovation of my grandmother’s old, neglected house. Cleaning the surroundings and removing damaged materials. Reusing old wooden doors and roof tiles donated by a kind neighbor. Collecting stones and preparing the foundation to save construction costs. Working with my own hands despite our limited resources. Choosing to care for my 80-year-old grandmother and build a new life together. Sometimes, life takes away the home we thought we would always have. But with love, hard work, and determination, we can build another place to call home. What would you do if you were in my situation? Have you ever repaired an old house or started over after a difficult time in your life? I would love to hear your stories in the comments.
