In 1963, a British officer drew a line through Nicosia with a green wax pencil to stop two communities from shooting at each other. He expected it to last a few weeks. Sixty-plus years later, it's still there — running through the last divided capital city on the planet, past a resort town frozen since 1974 with 1970s furniture still inside its abandoned hotels, guarded the entire way by one of the longest-running UN peacekeeping missions in the world.
This is Cyprus — an EU member state in the south, an unrecognized republic backed only by Turkey in the north, and an island where reunification talks have come agonizingly close to succeeding more times than anyone can count, only to collapse again. We go inside divided Nicosia, the ghost resort of Varosha, the property disputes still unresolved after fifty years, and the one thing — a cheese — that finally forced both sides to agree on something.
