Welcome to Chapter 9: Ascension and the Sending of the Holy Spirit. “Jesus Reigns in Heaven and Sends the Spirit to Empower His People”
So far, we have been walking through the great story of salvation:
• Creation - God created humanity in His image for communion with Him.
• The Fall/Rebellion - Humanity sinned and became separated from God.
• God’s Promise of Redemption - God promised a Savior who would defeat evil.
• God Works Through Israel - God prepared the way for the Messiah through Abraham, Moses, David, and the prophets.
• The Coming of the Messiah: Jesus Christ - God sent His Son into the world.
• Jesus’ Death on the Cross - Jesus died as the perfect sacrifice for sin.
• The Resurrection - Jesus rose from the dead, defeating sin, death, and the grave.
Now we come to Chapter 9: The Ascension and the Sending of the Holy Spirit.
Many Christians talk often about Jesus’ birth, death, and resurrection, but sometimes they do not talk as much about the ascension. However, the ascension is extremely important. The ascension means Jesus returned bodily to heaven after His resurrection. He did not stop existing. He did not become a memory or symbol. He is alive, exalted, reigning, and interceding for His people.
Jesus’ ascension teaches us that He is King. He is seated at the right hand of the Father. This is a position of authority, honor, and victory. Jesus completed His saving work on earth, and now He reigns from heaven. But Jesus did not leave His followers alone. Before He ascended, Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would come. He told His disciples they would receive power when the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they would be His witnesses to the ends of the earth.
That promise was fulfilled at Pentecost in Acts 2. The Holy Spirit came upon the believers in Jerusalem. They were filled with the Spirit, empowered to speak, and Peter preached the gospel. Thousands responded in repentance and faith. The Church began its public mission.
This chapter helps us understand an important truth: Jesus reigns in heaven, and the Holy Spirit empowers believers on earth. The Christian life is not lived by human strength alone. The Church does not carry out God’s mission by personality, talent, money, popularity, or human wisdom. Believers need the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit:
• dwells in believers,
• gives new life,
• empowers witness,
• teaches truth,
• reminds us of Jesus’ words,
• convicts of sin,
• produces spiritual fruit,
• gives spiritual gifts,
• unites the Church,
• seals believers for salvation,
• helps us pray,
• and makes Christ known.
Through the Holy Spirit, God’s presence is with His people in a new and powerful way.
(SONG) Ke Ala Hou
[Verse 1]
Outside Jerusalem
You gave Your life
Golgotha was silent
The dark took the night
Joseph’s tomb was sealed
Stone rolled in place
Guards stood watch in fear
But You stayed not there
[Pre-Chorus]
Early in the morning
The women came near
Searching for a body
Only wonder was here
[Chorus]
He is risen, e ola!
Jesus lives today
He is risen, e ola!
Death has lost its way
Oh, our hope is living
Our sins are washed away
He is risen, e ola!
Jesus lives today
[Verse 2]
Mary heard Your voice
And knew her Lord
Peter saw the mercy
He had long ignored
On the road to Emmaus
You walked with flame
In the gathered room
You spoke our name
[Pre-Chorus]
Thomas touched the scars
And bowed his head
All our fear was broken
When the grave was left dead
[Chorus]
He is risen, e ola!
Jesus lives today
He is risen, e ola!
Death has lost its way
Oh, our hope is living
Our sins are washed away
He is risen, e ola!
Jesus lives today
[Bridge]
Before, we were hiding
Now we proclaim
Before, it looked like loss
Now glory remains
The cross was victory
The tomb was not the end
Forgiven and made new
We rise with You, our Friend
[Chorus]
He is risen, e ola!
Jesus lives today
He is risen, e ola!
Death has lost its way
Oh, our hope is living
Our sins are washed away
He is risen, e ola!
Jesus lives today
[Outro]
No more fear in the morning
No more shame in the night
Jesus, our risen Savior
You make all things right
