This is *Park 45* of my journey exploring and documenting the beautiful parks and gardens of Vancouver. History of VanDusen Botanical Garden VanDusen Botanical Garden officially opened to the public on **August 30, 1975**, transforming a former golf course into one of Canada's most remarkable botanical attractions. The land was previously part of the Shaughnessy Heights Golf Club, which operated there until 1960. In 1966, a group of dedicated Vancouver residents established the Vancouver Botanical Garden Association to advocate for preserving the site as a public botanical garden. The garden was named after **Whitford Julian VanDusen (W.J. VanDusen)**, a Canadian philanthropist whose generous financial contribution helped make the project possible. Covering approximately **55 acres (22 hectares)**, the garden is home to more than 7,500 plant species and varieties from around the world. Today, VanDusen Botanical Garden features picturesque lakes, landscaped gardens, peaceful walking trails, fascinating plant collections, and the famous Elizabethan Hedge Maze. The garden is located on the traditional, unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. Autumn at VanDusen Botanical Garden During autumn, the garden transforms into a colourful landscape of golden yellow, brilliant orange, deep red, and warm brown foliage. The peaceful pathways, seasonal colours, and beautiful botanical scenery make it a wonderful destination for nature lovers, photographers, and visitors exploring Vancouver.
