Anja Huwe is a German singer and visual artist, recognized as the voice of Hamburg’s Xmal Deutschland and a key figure in European Post-Punk. In the early 1980s, Xmal Deutschland emerged from Germany’s underground scene, blending Punk energy with dark guitars, tribal rhythms, and Huwe’s strong German vocals. Albums such as Fetisch and Tocsin, released on 4AD, set the band apart and made them a major part of the early Post-Punk and Goth scenes. After spending decades focused on visual art, Huwe returned to music in 2024 with Codes. She made the album with her longtime friend and producer Mona Mur, and it features former Xmal Deutschland guitarist Manuela Rickers. The album builds on the darkness and tension of her earlier work, but adds new elements like electronics, industrial sounds, haunting guitar, and Huwe’s unique voice. In 2026, she brought this music to North America, including a September 1 show at HQ in Denver with Plague Garden, Weathered Statues, and DJ Katastrophy. More than forty years after Xmal Deutschland began, Huwe is not just looking back.
