The Supreme Court has given the Bihar government a final eight-week deadline to remove unauthorised structures and encroachments from the Ganga floodplains between Nauzar Ghat and Nurpur Ghat in Patna. The order came after the state informed the court that its earlier directions had been only partially complied with. A bench of Justice J.B. Pardiwala and Justice K.V. Viswanathan made it clear that this is the last extension. The court warned that if the directions are not complied with, the Bihar Chief Secretary and other officials could be summoned and contempt proceedings may follow. The court has also sought a full compliance report after the eight-week period and said no further time will be granted. The case concerns unauthorised constructions and encroachments along the Ganga floodplains in Patna. Earlier surveys and reports submitted in the case had identified unauthorised constructions in parts of the riverfront area. The Supreme Court has also allowed people claiming that their constructions are on legally owned land to approach the competent authority with title documents and authorised building permissions. The latest order puts the focus on Bihar government's compliance, floodplain protection and the future of constructions along the Ganga in Patna.
