The Girl Before the Woman is an original contemporary country song about first love, first heartbreak and the wisdom a father tries to share with his son when life delivers one of its earliest and hardest lessons about love. THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE SONG I wrote this song for my 17-year-old son after his first girlfriend broke up with him. Like so many teenagers experiencing their first heartbreak, he was hurting. And as his father, I wanted to help him understand something that's difficult to see when you're young and your heart has just been broken. The first person you fall in love with isn't necessarily the person you'll spend your life with. Sometimes, the girl who breaks your heart is simply the girl who comes before the woman you're ultimately meant to love. That's where the idea for The Girl Before the Woman came from. I wanted to put into words the perspective that comes with age and experience. That heartbreak, as painful as it is, can be part of growing up. That the end of a first relationship isn't the end of love. And that somewhere down the road, there's a whole future waiting that a 17-year-old heart can't yet imagine.
