Little Pixie II by Thad Jones, isolated horns by Paul Morelli

A jazz orchestra chart worthy of both listening and study - Thad Jones' super creative "Little Pixie II". It's full of surprising dissonances, interesting chromaticism, and chords voiced all kinds of weird ways. The form is rhythm changes in A-flat, so nothing wild or groundbreaking in overall form, but the details in the arrangement are surprising. This horns-only recording gives you more of a chance to hear all the writing clearly. The "II" in the title comes from the fact that it's a reworking of a small group chart called simply "Little Pixie". I appreciate Thad's restraint to not call it "Little Pixie II: Electric Boogaloo".
