Sun Quintet Live - Big Little Concepts S02E01

💎 Support Big Little Concepts: https://pay.yoco.com/concept-records We were so excited to welcome back to the studio Sun Quintet - the award-winning jazz group from Stellenbosch - to kick off this second season of Big Little Concepts. The band offered a selection of three original compositions from their debut album ‘Embrace The Path’, which was recorded in our studio back in 2023 and took home the award for ‘Best Jazz Album’ at the Mzansi Jazz Awards in 2024. Each of the members offers a masterclass in their instrument, demonstrating prowess and sensitivity, with the songs in this performance paying tribute to the legends of South African jazz in both title and spirit. The opening track, ‘Makhathini’, whose leading melody was co-composed by the legendary South African artist Dr. Nduduzo Makhathini, establishes the band's rhythmic chops, and features extended solos by Melisizwe Plaatjie (keyboards) and Mark Lynch (saxophone). It's followed by ‘Bra Feya’, a song that showcases the band’s ability to explore contrasts, with a gentle and articulate solo by Aubrey Matsila (trombone) building into a fast-paced mbaqanga jive to close the tune. Although he doesn’t take a solo himself, the foundation of the performance is held down by Stuart Martin (drums), locked in tightly with Chadleigh Gowar (bass) who sends the performance home with a stinging bass solo on the closing track ‘JG’s Legacy’.
