The Iran war was supposed to last weeks. Eight months later, the United States is sending a third aircraft carrier toward the region—and the next major question may be what happens after November 3.
In this detailed analysis, Akram Naeem Bharoka examines why the USS Theodore Roosevelt and an accompanying amphibious group are heading toward the Middle East, while two other U.S. carrier groups are already in the region. Is this deployment designed to pressure Iran into accepting a deal before the U.S. midterm elections, or is Washington preparing for a much longer conflict?
The timing is crucial. With the U.S. midterm elections approaching, President Donald Trump faces pressure over rising oil and gasoline prices, the enormous cost of the war, and growing divisions within his own Republican Party. At the same time, Iran has proposed a seven-day framework involving the Strait of Hormuz, sanctions relief, frozen assets and renewed nuclear negotiations—but Washington has rejected the proposal.
The war is also transforming the economics and security of the Gulf.
Saudi Arabia faces pressure on both of its major oil-export routes, while attacks and disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea threaten energy shipments. Qatar's LNG infrastructure, Kuwait's oil production and Dubai's tourism and aviation sectors have all been affected by the wider conflict. The question is no longer simply who can win the war—but who can afford to keep it going.
The video also examines the growing strategic dilemma facing Gulf states. For decades, countries such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait have relied heavily on the United States for security. But if an American security guarantee cannot prevent a prolonged regional war—or if the war itself reaches their territory—could Gulf countries eventually seek greater regional security arrangements of their own?
From the Strait of Hormuz and Saudi oil exports to China's role in the Gulf and the possibility of a new regional security architecture, Akram Naeem Bharoka examines what this eight-month war could mean for Iran, America and the future of the Middle East.
