Narration: It was pouring rain outside. Amidst the rumbling clouds and heavy downpour, Neha—Bua-ji’s daughter—was irritably scrubbing dirty dishes in the kitchen, while Pinky—Mausi-ji’s daughter-in-law—was frying pakoras in a wok. Pinky kept wiping sweat from her brow with the edge of her sari. Just then, Saroj appeared at the kitchen doorway and...
Saroj (56) (in a loud, stern voice): Hey girls! Is the tea and snack ready yet? Everyone outside is waiting... they all want piping hot tea... hurry up!
Narration: Having said this, Saroj briskly walked out of the kitchen without waiting for a reply. Neha slammed the soapy lather into the sink while scrubbing the dishes and, glaring angrily at Pinky, said...
Neha (25) (angrily): We made a huge mistake coming to this house. Not only are we guests, but they’re making us do all the work. What kind of behavior is this?
Pinky (29) (irritably, while taking pakoras out of the wok): You’re absolutely right, Neha! When we visit other relatives, they treat us so well—we don't even have to pour ourselves a glass of water! But these people... they’re making us cook the meal and wash this mountain of dishes.
Neha (25) (angrily): Exactly! Look, it’s raining so beautifully outside, yet instead of the daughter-in-law handling the kitchen, they’ve handed it over to us guests. I don't know what kind of people they are.
Narration: Why are these in-laws making their own guests do the work? Why did they hand over the kitchen to the guests during the rain? To find out the real reason behind this, let’s go back a little in the story...
Flashback starts ✅ ✅
Narration: It was drizzling outside. Ruhi was sitting comfortably on the living room sofa, watching TV and sipping coffee, when the landline rang. Ruhi’s mother-in-law, Saroj, came out of her room and picked up the phone...
Saroj (56) (with a big smile): Hello? Oh, Pakhi dear! How are you? What did you say... you and Samar are coming? Wow! That’s wonderful news... do come over, dear...
Narration: Saroj hung up the phone happily and turned towards Ruhi...
Saroj (56) (excitedly): Ruhi, *bahu*! Listen, Pakhi and our son-in-law are coming over. It’s raining, so please arrange something delicious for them to eat and drink...
Ruhi (26) (smiling as she turned off the TV): Of course, *Maa-ji*, don't you worry... I’ll go and get everything ready right away...
Narration: Ruhi got up and went into the kitchen, happily setting to work. By evening, the rain had picked up. Just then, the doorbell rang. Pakhi and Samar walked in, and Ruhi and Saroj welcomed them at the door...
Saroj (56) (hugging Pakhi): My child! How are you? Samar, dear, how are you doing?
Ruhi (26) (happily, while hiding the fatigue on her face): Please, come in... do have a seat...
Pakhi (25) (smiling): Wow, *Bhabhi*! As soon as one enters the house, there’s a wonderful aroma of *pakodas*...
Ruhi (26) (affectionately): You all were coming over, after all—that’s why I’m making them... They’re just about ready; I’ll bring them out...
Narration: Ruhi goes back into the kitchen... Pakhi follows her inside...
Pakhi (25) (placing a hand on Ruhi’s shoulder): Why are you stressing, *Bhabhi*? I’ll come along and help you...
Narration: Together, they arrange piping hot tea and pakodas on a tray and bring them out... Everyone sits on the sofa, enjoying the pakodas amidst laughter and lighthearted banter...
Saroj (56) (looking at Samar): And Samar, my boy, what would you like to eat?
Ruhi (26) (eagerly): Yes, do tell—what should I make?
Pakhi (25) (eating a pakoda*): *Bhabhi*, I’m really craving *biryani*... It’s been so long since I’ve had *biryani made by you...
Ruhi (26) (smiling): Oh, is that so? Well then, *Nanad-ji*, I’ll make *biryani*...
Narration: Just as Ruhi says this, her father-in-law, Ashok, walks in from outside...
Ashok (58) (laughing): I knew my daughter would want *biryani*... that’s why I brought chicken along beforehand... the chicken is right here in this bag.
Ruhi (26) (smiling): Wow, Sasur-ji*, you read *Nanad-ji’s mind before she even said it... I’ll go start the preparations right away...
Narration: Ruhi was cleaning the chicken in the kitchen... strands of hair were sticking to her forehead due to the sweat... just then, Saroj rushed into the kitchen...
