Turning a Bird’s Eye Yellow Birch Burl
Finding a Bird’s Eye Yellow Birch Burl is extremely rare in North American woodworking circles. This burl came to me from a gentleman just across the river in Quebec, who unfortunately had to retire from turning due to health reasons. The piece sat in the shop for 5 years as I waited for a lathe with enough capacity and the right inspiration to justify such a rare wood. During that time, what is already a dense and hard wood, dried and became even harder. Effecting not only the turning speed but also the frequency of sharpening and honing the gouges. At the risk of the piece being too busy, I left as much of the live and natural edge components intact as I could; they provide so much character and depth to the finished piece. In considering the gentleman who had to give up this unique burl, it is even more special to have saved the core for a future project.
Finish sanding through 320 grit, the bird’s eye texture remains. Osmo’s Polyx-Oil brought out the deserved variation in the wood’s colouring and depth.
This bowl is going to be given as a retirement gift and will hopefully be enjoyed for many seasons to come!
