The Harvey Girls: How They Civilized the Wild West's Worst Hotels

Discover what wild west hotels were really like, from lice-infested canvas shacks to the civilized luxury of Harvey Houses. When pioneers and prospectors flooded the frontier, they quickly discovered what wild west hotels were really like. Early mining camps and boomtowns offered little more than crude canvas shacks, cramped boarding houses where lodgers fought for food, and makeshift beds infested with pests. As the railroads expanded, visionary businessman Fred Harvey transformed frontier hospitality. By introducing the Harvey Houses, weary travelers traded raw alcohol and rancid meat for fine China, Irish linens, and a strict cup code managed by the famous Harvey Girls. IN THIS VIDEO • The 1869 cost of a New York boarding house was $2.50 to $40 a week. • Saloons served whiskey made of raw alcohol, burnt sugar, and chewing tobacco. • Chicago cage hotels used chicken wire to seal off tiny cubicle spaces. • Fred Harvey opened his first depot restaurant in Topeka, Kansas in 1876. • A strict cup code allowed eager waitresses to feed a train in 30 minutes.
