Glimpse of The Indus River | Archaeological Survey from the Sky

The Indus River is one of Asia’s great rivers and one of the defining geographical features of South Asian history. Flowing for approximately 3,180 kilometres from the Tibetan Plateau through the Himalayas and across Pakistan to the Arabian Sea, the river has shaped landscapes, communities, agriculture, trade, and civilizations for thousands of years. This short drone video, “Glimpse of the Indus River,” was recorded during an archaeological survey of the Indus River landscape in Sindh, Pakistan. For archaeologists, the Indus is more than a river. Its changing course, floodplains, terraces, settlements, and surrounding landscapes provide important clues for understanding the development and movement of human communities through time. The river system was fundamental to the emergence and development of the Indus Civilization, including major archaeological sites such as Mohenjo-daro, Harappa, and many smaller settlements and cultural sites distributed across the Indus region. From ancient settlements and agricultural landscapes to routes of communication and trade, the Indus has remained closely connected with human life for millennia. Archaeological surveys along and around the river help document this relationship and identify landscapes and archaeological remains that contribute to our understanding of the past. This aerial footage offers a brief glimpse of the Indus River and its surrounding archaeological landscape, captured using drone-based documentation techniques.
