I found a vintage 1940s oak speaker cabinet on the Facebook marketplace for sale. It looked pretty cool and I thought it would make a nice retro style practice amp for my cigar box guitar so I bought it for £10.00
It was in a pretty bad state when I first got it, the cabinet was very rickety and needed some fixing up and the speaker itself was ruined. So I had to glue and clamp the cabinet to restore the rigidity and replace the old ruined speaker with a new one. The cabinet would take a 12” speaker but the original was around 9" so I compromised and went for an 8” speaker, which was also better value for money.
I’m not great with electronics, but I figured that I could take the innards from a cheap mini amp and use them to repurpose the old speaker cabinet into a cool vintage-looking practice amp that is ideal for use with my cigar box guitar. The question was: would the mini amp circuitry power the bigger speaker?
