Roundabout 40 event in swanley garage 16/08/2026

In this video, I visit Swanley Garage for an event celebrating 40 years of the London Roundabout bus network. Based around Orpington and the surrounding areas of south-east London and Kent, the network began in 1986 and operated routes including R1 to R7 and R11. It was famous for using small minibuses such as the Iveco RH and Optare vehicles, before larger buses such as the Dennis Dart became common. Roundabout was a pioneering London minibus network designed to serve residential areas where conventional large buses were difficult or uneconomic to operate. Smaller buses could travel along narrow roads while providing important local connections. The first route, R1, began on 16 June 1986. It was operated by Orpington Buses Ltd, a London Buses subsidiary trading as Roundabout. The first buses were Iveco RH minibuses and Optare vehicles in a distinctive maroon-and-grey livery. The original R1 was much longer than today's route, running from Bromley Common to Queen Mary's Hospital, with a branch to St Paul's Cray and Grovelands Road. On 16 August 1986, more routes were introduced, including R2 between Orpington and Biggin Hill Valley, R3 between Petts Wood and Green Street Green, R4 around Locksbottom and Orpington, R5 as an Orpington circular via Cudham and Knockholt, and R6 between Orpington and Sevenoaks. R5 replaced the previous London & Country 431 service. The original R6 travelled via Knockholt and Shoreham to Sevenoaks but lasted only around 18 months, being withdrawn in early 1988. In 1987, some R1 journeys were diverted through Orpington Hospital and became R11. This eventually created separate R1 and R11 services. As the network became successful, passenger numbers increased and the original minibuses became overcrowded. They were gradually replaced by larger vehicles, including MRLs and Dennis Darts. R7 was introduced in July 1988, linking Cockmannings Estate and Coppice Estate. A major change came in 1989 when London Buses was reorganised into separate operating companies. Orpington Buses Ltd, trading as Roundabout, ceased as a separate company and the original branding disappeared. However, the routes continued, meaning the R-prefix survived. During the early 1990s, the original Iveco and Optare minibuses were increasingly replaced by larger midibuses and Dennis Darts. R1 received Dart-type buses around 1990, while the maroon-and-grey colours were replaced by standard London red. Operators also changed, with companies such as First Centrewest and later Metrobus becoming involved. First Centrewest took over R1 in 1995. The routes continued to evolve. R1 was shortened and rerouted, with the Bromley Common section disappearing by 2001. R3, originally linking Petts Wood and Green Street Green, was extended towards Locksbottom and Princess Royal University Hospital before being altered again. It later used vehicles such as Darts and Enviro200s. By the 2010s, the original tiny-minibus concept had effectively disappeared, but the R-numbering remained. R1 was rerouted through Tower Road in 2017, while R2 was shortened from Petts Wood back to Orpington and the R6 number was also reused several times. A second R6 operated as a peak-hour Orpington circular from 1992 to 1998. A third R6 began in 2001, initially running between Orpington and St Mary Cray Station. It survived for more than two decades before being withdrawn in 2025. Despite the changes to vehicles, operators and routes, the R-prefix remains an important legacy of the original Roundabout network. Today, 40 years after the first R1 service, the Roundabout network remains an important part of Orpington's bus history. Anyways enjoy the video!!!
