Before the advent of monetary systems in ancient times, humans relied on various methods for trade and the circulation of goods—such as direct barter, the exchange of gifts to foster relationships, the use of credit, and the keeping of debt records within a community. While direct exchange might have sufficed among people who knew one another, it faced significant limitations: a potential mismatch in needs, the challenge of establishing equivalent values, the difficulty of subdividing goods, and obstacles related to timing and storage. As societies grew and expanded, personal relationships were no longer sufficient to sustain increasingly complex economic systems. Consequently, there arose a need for a standardized medium to facilitate the measurement of value and the settlement of debts—a development that eventually led to the emergence of monetary systems.
