This video teaches Learning Outcome 3 of Unit 5 Managing Communication: developing your own communication skills in the workplace. It is a competence outcome, so the evidence must come from your own real work, and the video explains exactly what that means. You will learn the role and process of reflection using Schön (1983), Kolb (1984), Gibbs (1988) and Rolfe, Freshwater and Jasper (2001). We cover five situations from the unit content: delegating, negotiating, motivating, briefing and providing information, with cases from Timpson, the NHS SBAR tool and after-action reviews. You will see how to judge whether the method you used was appropriate, how to use feedback and why self-assessment needs outside evidence. The second half shows how to build a personal development plan: auditing skills, prioritising goals, writing SMART targets with Doran (1981) and Locke and Latham (2002), planning support and review, and looking beyond the plan. It shows what Pass and Merit work looks like for criteria 3.1 and 3M1 and is designed for learners on the ATHE Level 5 Extended Diploma in Business and Management.
