In the early 1940s, Veronica Lake was one of the most recognizable stars in America. Her long blonde hair, the famous peekaboo style, was copied by women everywhere. But by 1962, a New York reporter found her working as a barmaid in a Manhattan hotel. How did a Paramount star end up forgotten?
In this documentary, we follow Veronica Lake from her childhood in Brooklyn to her rise at Paramount Pictures, her films with Alan Ladd including This Gun for Hire, The Glass Key, and The Blue Dahlia, and her role in Preston Sturges’s Sullivan’s Travels. We look at how the studio system shaped her image, how Hollywood changed after the war, her money and marriage troubles, her struggles with alcohol, and the autobiography she published in 1969.
We also cover her final years, her last film, Flesh Feast, and her death in 1973 at just fifty. There was no single reason she was forgotten, and this video explains the real mix of factors. Where records are unclear or accounts differ, the video says so.
