Riding Britain's Disused Potteries Loop Line: Stoke to Kidsgrove 1938

This film reconstructs a 1938 evening passenger service along the North Staffordshire Railway Potteries Loop Line, travelling from Stoke-on-Trent to Kidsgrove and calling at Etruria, Hanley, Waterloo Road, Cobridge, Burslem, Tunstall, Pitts Hill, Newchapel & Goldenhill, Kidsgrove Halt and Kidsgrove - a sequence of now disused stations that once served the industrial heart of the city. The journey follows a timetabled working (17.18–17.50) and reflects the everyday commuter services used by pottery workers, miners, and local residents in the years immediately before the Second World War. Along the way, the train passes pottery factories, iron and steelworks, coalmines, terraced housing, yards, and junctions that defined the landscape of North Staffordshire in the steam era. The route of the loop line from Kidsgrove to Cobridge is well preserved as greenways and walkways. However in Etruria and Hanley developments have removed or obscured much of the line.
