25 miles of California coastline with no roads, no cell service, and a tide that decides when you move.
The Lost Coast Trail — Humboldt County’s King Range — is the longest stretch of undeveloped coast in the contiguous US. The reason it’s undeveloped: Highway 1 engineers looked at these mountains rising 4,000 feet from the ocean and gave up.
We backpacked it north to south over three days in September, starting later than anyone recommends, crossing the impassable headlands in the afternoon on a falling spring tide (full moon weekend — the lowest lows of the month), and finishing a 3-mile Day 3 by 10:24 AM.
Highlights along the way: a lighthouse that horses kept alive for 39 years and a tidal corridor that’s either a beach or a wall of water depending on when you show up.
The ocean runs things here. You just work around it.
