26.2 miles. Over 3,300 feet of elevation gain. Trails, dirt roads, steep climbs, and Alaska's unpredictable fall weather. Welcome to the Equinox Marathon. 🏔️🥶
In this video, I take you along for my 2026 Equinox Marathon experience in Fairbanks, Alaska—from race day preparations to the course, the climbs, the scenery, and the grind of making it through one of the most challenging marathon courses in the country.
The Equinox Marathon is NOT your typical road marathon. The course starts and finishes at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and takes runners through a mixture of trails, dirt roads, powerline sections, bike paths, and pavement. The biggest challenge is the massive climb up and over Ester Dome—and then dealing with the elevation again on the return.
🏔️ WHY IS THE EQUINOX MARATHON SO HARD?
The course features approximately 3,300 feet of cumulative elevation gain, with major climbs and descents throughout the 26.2 miles. The official race organization describes it as a challenging marathon that will test your running ability, while its preparation guide specifically warns that the technical trail and serious elevation changes make it a race where you're extremely unlikely to PR.
And the terrain makes a huge difference. Much of the course is on trails rather than smooth pavement, meaning runners have to deal with uneven surfaces, climbs, descents, and constantly changing conditions.
🏆 HOW DOES IT RANK?
There's no single official worldwide ranking system for marathon difficulty, but the Equinox has developed a reputation as one of the toughest marathon courses in the United States. Explore Fairbanks has described it as being among the top 10 toughest marathons in the U.S.
A 2026 third-party U.S. marathon difficulty ranking went even further, placing the Equinox #1 among the 50 state marathons in that particular ranking. That methodology considered elevation gain, average finish time, finish rate, and attendance, and credited the Equinox with approximately 3,285 feet of elevation gain. That's a specific ranking's methodology—not an official designation by the race itself—but it gives some perspective on how demanding the course is.
🏃♂️ RACE FEATURES
• 26.2-mile marathon
• 3,300+ feet of elevation gain
• Primarily trail terrain with dirt, gravel and paved sections
• Major climb over Ester Dome
• Beautiful Interior Alaska scenery
• Fall colors and potentially unpredictable weather
• 11 aid stations plus the finish in the 2026 race
• 10-hour cutoff, allowing runners to hike portions of the course if necessary (What I ended up doing lol)
• Marathon, 3-person relay and marathon hike options
This race is as much a mental challenge as it is a physical one. You're not just trying to run 26.2 miles—you're climbing, descending, navigating trails, managing your energy, and trying to keep moving when your legs are already tired.
And that's exactly what I wanted to capture in this vlog.
Welcome to the Equinox Marathon. Welcome to Alaska. 🏔️
