Sage Gautama, through intense Tapasya to Lord Varuna, received a divine, ever-flowing kunda within his ashram. With its water, he grew rice and fed thousands of starving people and ascetics who came seeking refuge. But Gautama's growing reputation brought envy among other sages. Seeking to drive him away, they prayed to Lord Ganesha, who reluctantly intervened by appearing as an illusory cow. When Gautama gently tried to move the cow away from his fields with a blade of Darbha grass, the illusion collapsed and the cow appeared to die. The jealous sages accused Gautama of Go-Hatya, the killing of a cow, forcing him into exile. Gautama and his wife Ahalya then undertook severe penance on Brahmagiri, worshipping Lord Shiva with thousands of clay lingams. Pleased by their unwavering devotion, Shiva revealed the deception and cleared Gautama of all wrongdoing. But Gautama asked for no revenge. Instead, he asked Shiva to bring the celestial Ganga to earth so that the drought-stricken land could be nourished once again. Shiva released the sacred waters, and the river began its journey as Gautami and Godavari, eventually flowing across the Deccan to the Bay of Bengal.
