Why the UK Needs to Understand RSS | Rohit Ambekar on Dr Mohan Bhagwat’s London Visit

Why is it important for Britain to understand the RSS in order to understand India? And how did RSS Sarsanghchalak Dr Mohan Bhagwat’s recent UK visit change perceptions among British parliamentarians, business leaders, academics, faith leaders and members of the Hindu community? In this special conversation with Organiser, Rohit Ambekar Convenor of Integral, speaks about the thinking behind the platform, the organisation of the “Universal Oneness” programme in London, and the effort to create direct dialogue between India’s socio-cultural leadership and influential sections of British society. Ambekar reveals that the response to engagement with the RSS was far more positive than expected. According to him, several participants who came with preconceived notions about the RSS emerged from their interactions with Dr Bhagwat with a very different understanding—and some even expressed a desire to visit Nagpur and learn more about the organisation’s work. The conversation also explores Dr Bhagwat’s message of Hindutva as an inclusive and geo-cultural idea, Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, the coming together of different Hindu traditions in Britain, and the importance of giving younger generations confidence in their civilisational heritage. A major focus is the question of Janmabhoomi and Karmabhoomi. Ambekar explains why Dr Bhagwat’s message—that one’s loyalty must first be towards the country where one lives and contributes, while carrying forward the positive values of one’s civilisational heritage—was among his biggest personal takeaways.
