Violet Evergarden AMV about the ruthlessly internal nature of falling in love. Strangely, the bedrock of this AMV in particular is deception. In Violet Evergarden, these two women are not in love, they do not write longing letters to each other, and their individual pain is not romantic in nature. I have tried my best to manipulate this combo into existence simply because I wanted to. More on that in a second. Are the new viewers gone yet? Sarah Kinsley's (‪@sarahkinsleyd‬) song, "Lovegod," is (to me), at its core, about the intersection of self-doubt, the methodical search for a reckless love, and the hypnotic pull of destructive abandon. If you pay close attention to the lyrics, the singer prays to a god she knows is indifferent ("singing holy praises / to an indifferent god") for a love she knows would amount to a temporary numbing of her routine, nagging incompleteness ("So I go where they say lovers go / It's a dark room in a bar / It's a drink by my side"). She acknowledges her desperate search for quick love to repair her ("Lovegod / Send me someone / Send me anyone / to close this mountain inside"), while distrusting the pull of infatuation ("Walking into the sun with my eyes / Delay the feeling / Delay the feeling / Delay the feeling") when it comes. So, the manipulation of the two women in this AMV is a kind of meta-commentary. If you intentionally put things together in just the right way, you can construct the illusion of romance that feels right, whether or not it ever existed at all. You can even get swept up in it. The editing itself is very emotional, meaning that big drops in the music that ask for big visual editing are instead linked to small moments that signify internal changes of heart, e.g. the thawing of a reluctant heart on a warm cluster of piano keys (0:22), the whiplash of broader epiphany (0:28) within the same scene instead of a hard cut to something else, and giving up the stubborn interest in control to let Violet take the lead (2:06). To me, this kind of editing supports a narrative depth by locking you into a situation with context and forcing you to empathize. Again, the romantic angst in this AMV literally does not exist--the AMV does not create the uneasiness of doomed love itself. It's meant to evoke the sadness that you already carry, as we all do.
